Critic Questions Meghan Markle’s Attacks on King Charles and Princess Catherine Amid Their Health Battles
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have noticeably stepped back from voicing grievances about King Charles and the Royal Family this year—a decision believed to be influenced by His Majesty’s cancer diagnosis.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have previously made headlines with their criticisms of the monarchy, appear to be taking a more restrained approach out of respect for the King’s health struggles.
Amanda Platell, writing for the Daily Mail, weighed in on the couple’s silence, suggesting it’s a reflection of the current circumstances. “How could Megs keep coining it by being horrid about King Charles and the future Queen Catherine, as she has done in the past when they were so ill?” Platell questioned.
She continued, “And when people across the world were admiring the way both King and Princess not only publicly revealed their diagnoses but soldiered on as best they could with their duties in spite of their illnesses.”
However, Platell also pointed out that this silence comes at a cost. Without high-profile, lucrative projects like their Oprah Winfrey interview, the Netflix docuseries, or Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, the couple has faced growing financial pressure.
“Yet without income from projects like that Oprah interview, their tell-all Netflix documentary series, and Harry’s book Spare, the couple have been woefully exposed,” Platell observed.
Reflecting on the Sussexes’ current situation, she speculated on the emotional toll of their choices. “How lonely and, yes, anxious, they must feel as they spend Christmas in their fine Montecito mansion. She is with her mum Doria, but with her dad, exiled from her life and yet living just a few miles away, and Harry is worlds apart from his own family.”
Prince Harry and Meghan famously stepped back from royal duties in 2020, relocating to California with their son, Prince Archie. Since then, they have been vocal about their struggles within the monarchy, including allegations of racism and a lack of support. Their departure—and the subsequent media storm—deepened the rift between the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family.
Now settled in Montecito, the couple has focused on raising their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, while navigating the challenges of their new life away from the monarchy.
As King Charles and Princess Catherine’s health battles remain a central focus for the Royal Family, Harry and Meghan’s quiet stance this year suggests a moment of reflection—one that, for now, keeps their criticisms at bay.
