Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen not to respond to a critical Vanity Fair article about their lives and business ventures, a decision that experts say is likely the best course of action.
The article, titled Inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Big Business Ambitions, 5 Years After Their Royal Exit, alleged that Prince Harry would be content with Meghan “making all the money for the family.” It also revisited accusations of bullying against the Duchess of Sussex.
Royal PR expert Ailsa Anderson, a former communications secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth II, believes the Sussexes’ silence is a strategic choice. Speaking on A Right Royal Podcast, Anderson explained, “If you start adding fuel to the fire, then you’re just elongating a story. There are times to stand up and be counted, and there are times to say nothing.”
Anderson added, “I think actually they’re right. Just let it go and move forward. Otherwise, they’ll be creating a further story of their own making.” The decision to stay silent comes amidst claims that the couple is privately upset about the article.
Royal expert Kinsey Schofield shared insights into their reaction, stating, “It is my understanding that they are upset over it. I’m being told that things aren’t good for them right now… and here comes a very respected publication reiterating some of the nastiest claims about her.”
Schofield continued, “I think they are bruised and they’re sitting back, trying to figure out how to process going forward.” The Vanity Fair piece, which delves into the couple’s post-royal lives and financial endeavors, has reignited public scrutiny of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
However, experts suggest that addressing the claims would only serve to amplify them. This isn’t the first time the Sussexes have faced intense media criticism. Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Harry and Meghan have been under the spotlight for their business ventures, media appearances, and ongoing rift with the royal family.
While the couple’s silence might frustrate their critics, it reflects a deliberate approach to managing their public image. As Anderson emphasized, engaging with the article could backfire, turning a short-lived controversy into a prolonged media narrative.
