France’s Prime Minister François Bayrou has voiced strong disapproval over President Donald Trump’s angry rebuke of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, The Associated Press reported Monday. The incident, which unfolded in the Oval Office last week, has drawn widespread condemnation from European leaders concerned about U.S. support for Ukraine.
“On Friday night, in the Oval Office of the White House, a staggering scene unfurled before the lenses of the entire world, marked by brutality, a desire to humiliate, with the goal of making Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fold through threats so that he gives in to the demands of his aggressors,” said Bayrou during a parliamentary debate.

“All this was summed up in one phrase before the planet’s cameras: ‘Either you find a deal with Putin or we will abandon you.’” Bayrou went on to praise Zelensky’s resilience, stating, “For the honor of democratic responsibility, for the honor of Ukraine and, I dare say, for the honor of Europe, President Zelensky did not fold and I think we can show him our appreciation.”
His remarks were met with applause from members of Parliament. French officials have been working tirelessly to prevent the United States from withdrawing its support for Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion. French President Emmanuel Macron has recently had to correct Trump’s misleading claims about the structure of aid to Ukraine during a bilateral meeting.

Tensions reached a boiling point last week during Zelensky’s visit to the White House, where discussions over a mineral trade deal collapsed as the Ukrainian leader repeatedly pressed for stronger security guarantees. Trump, who has persistently and falsely accused Zelensky of being responsible for the conflict, publicly reprimanded him and ultimately dismissed him from the Oval Office.

Despite mounting international criticism, Trump has remained unapologetic about the altercation. Instead, he escalated the controversy by demanding that Zelensky issue an apology to him for the dispute.
This stance has only fueled further backlash from U.S. allies, with European leaders growing increasingly concerned about America’s shifting position on Ukraine. The diplomatic fallout from this confrontation continues to unfold, raising questions about the future of transatlantic relations and the broader geopolitical stability of Europe.
