A federal judge issued a “brief administrative stay” Tuesday, temporarily halting President Donald Trump’s freeze on federal grant funding, which was set to take effect at 5 p.m. The freeze, part of an executive order aimed at conducting an ideological spending review, sparked immediate legal challenges and widespread concern over its potential impact on critical programs.

Politico’s Kyle Cheney reported the development on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A federal judge has ordered a halt to Donald Trump’s sweeping aid freeze, issuing a ‘brief administrative stay’ to preserve the status quo for at least a few days while further litigation plays out.” The stay ensures that federal grants and loans will continue to flow while the court reviews the legality of Trump’s order.

The freeze, which targeted trillions of dollars in federal funding, was intended to allow the administration to review and potentially redirect spending to align with its ideological priorities. However, critics argued that the move would disrupt essential services, including health care, education, and infrastructure projects, affecting millions of Americans.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt sought to downplay the impact of the freeze, clarifying late Tuesday that it would not affect aid provided directly to individuals. “This action is about ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly and in line with the administration’s priorities,” Leavitt said. “It does not target aid to individuals.”

Despite her assurances, reports emerged that Medicaid portals were down in all 50 states for much of the day, raising concerns about the immediate consequences of the freeze. Medicaid, which provides health insurance to over 70 million low-income Americans, is heavily reliant on federal funding. The outage left many unable to access critical healthcare services, prompting outrage from lawmakers and advocacy groups.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) condemned the freeze, calling it “a blatant attempt to rip away health care from millions of Americans overnight.” Progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) echoed the sentiment, accusing Trump of “holding the nation’s hospitals and vital services hostage.”

The federal judge’s stay provides a temporary reprieve, but the legal battle over Trump’s executive order is far from over. The administration’s attempt to unilaterally reshape federal spending has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, who argue that such actions undermine the role of Congress in the budgeting process.

As the case moves through the courts, the outcome could have significant implications for the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches, as well as for the millions of Americans who depend on federal programs for their well-being.
