President Donald Trump ignited a heated controversy on Sunday after escalating tensions with Colombia, which critics say could spiral into a full-blown trade war. The conflict reportedly began when Trump, “caught by surprise” by actions from Colombia, ordered retaliatory tariffs on goods from the South American ally.

In response, Colombia’s leader issued tariffs of his own on all U.S. goods, escalating the situation further. The move drew sharp criticism from across the political spectrum, with many questioning the wisdom of targeting an ally. Former Tennessee Democratic election commissioner Chris D. Jackson criticized Trump’s actions, pointing out differences between his approach and that of President Joe Biden.

“For all the clowns hyping Trump’s move on Colombia: under Biden, Colombia accepted 475 deportation flights—over 120 in 2024 alone. And he didn’t have to show his a– or start a trade war to do it. He was just that good,” Jackson tweeted.

Democratic lawmaker Ruben Gallego also condemned the move, calling it unnecessary. “This is a dumb trade war that the Trump admin started,” he said. Gallego argued that the situation could have been handled diplomatically, adding, “This could have been resolved with a phone call. Trump picked a fight with an ally, to look strong.”

In a pointed reminder of the potential fallout, Gallego noted the impact on U.S. consumers, saying, “FYI get your orders in now for roses. We import a majority of roses from Colombia.” Former Democratic lawmaker Bakari Sellers joined the criticism, highlighting the accomplishments of the Biden administration.

“Colombia accepted 475 deportation flights under Biden, more than 120 in 2024 alone,” Sellers wrote. “All this without a trade war.” Dan Pfeiffer, a former senior adviser to Barack Obama, sarcastically remarked on the situation, tweeting, “Ooh, a dumb and pointless trade war in less than a week. Great work!”

Public figures outside politics also weighed in on the economic implications. A popular YouTuber known as @LiveFromTheResistance warned of skyrocketing costs for Americans. “And we have a trade war with Columbia in less than 1 week, which will send prices of gasoline and products skyrocketing for Americans.

Thanks, Trump,” the influencer tweeted. Attorney Aaron Parnas echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the direct impact on American consumers. “The United States is officially in a trade war with Colombia because of Donald Trump. Do you know who will suffer? You.”

As the conflict unfolds, critics are raising alarms over the potential economic fallout and questioning the strategy behind targeting a longstanding ally. Whether the situation can be de-escalated remains uncertain.
