President Donald Trump disrupted the U.S. Senate’s budget bill on Wednesday, blindsiding Republican Senate leadership, according to reports. NBC News’ Ryan Nobles revealed that Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) was caught off guard by Trump’s sudden opposition to the bill.
“I had no idea that Donald Trump was planning to blow this process up via his social media this morning. It was news to him when he saw the president’s position on this,” Thune said. Many Senate Republicans expressed doubts about passing Trump’s proposed “big beautiful bill” immediately. A government shutdown looms if a spending plan is not finalized soon.

Conservative deficit hawks oppose a budget that increases the national debt, while Trump is pushing for a $4 trillion deal to fund his tax cuts and new initiatives. However, Trump lacks the necessary votes to pass his bill without their support. He must either appease the far-right or negotiate with Democrats, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) noted last week.
On Wednesday, Trump used Truth Social to back a single spending bill while rejecting an alternative approach from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) that proposed splitting the budget into two separate bills—one easy to pass and another with more controversial elements.

“The vice president is going to join Republicans today for their Senate lunch to hash out a path forward,” Nobles reported. “But it’s clear that the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate are not on the same page when it comes to this reconciliation package, and it is the most important agenda item for Donald Trump.”

The Senate had planned to vote this week on the budget bill crafted by Graham. “I think we’re doing a productive exercise!” Graham replied before stepping into an elevator. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) expressed skepticism about the bill’s viability. “This is starting to feel like a fruitless exercise,” Warner told Raw Story. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t even get the majority of the Republican votes.”
