Washington, D.C. – Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith set aside the state’s trademark “Minnesota nice” in a heated social media battle with billionaire Elon Musk after she publicly slammed his recent ultimatum to federal workers as the “ultimate d-ck boss move.”

The dispute erupted after Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter) that federal employees under President Donald Trump’s administration would soon receive an email requiring them to justify their work from the previous week.

“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation,” Musk wrote on Saturday.

Sen. Smith, a Democrat from Minnesota, fired back at Bluesky, ridiculing the demand and calling out Musk’s behavior. “This is the ultimate d-ck boss move from Musk – except he isn’t even the boss, he’s just a d-ck,” Smith wrote.

She added, “I bet a lot of people have had an experience like this with a bad boss – there’s an email in your inbox on Saturday night saying, ‘Prove to me your worthiness by Monday or else.’ I’m on the side of the workers, not the billionaire a–hole bosses.”

Never one to back down from an online feud, Musk quickly responded on X, taking a direct shot at Smith’s work ethic. “What did you get done last week?” Musk asked. Smith, who is retiring at the end of her current term, wasted no time in clapping back, making it clear that she does not answer to Musk.

“Elon, I hate to break it to you, but you aren’t my boss,” she wrote on Sunday morning. “I answer to the people of Minnesota. But since you bring it up, I spent last week fighting to stop tax breaks for billionaires like you, paid for by defunding health care for moms and babies.”

The exchange highlights the ongoing tensions between lawmakers and billionaires like Musk, who has taken an increasingly active role in federal policy discussions. Critics argue that Musk’s growing influence in government operations raises ethical concerns, while supporters claim he is helping to eliminate inefficiencies in federal agencies.

As the public feud between Musk and Smith plays out online, it underscores a larger national debate over worker protections, corporate power, and the role of billionaires in shaping government policy.
