Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) drew controversy on Sunday when he defended the young tech entrepreneurs staffing Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), comparing them to the “Greatest Generation” of American soldiers who fought in World War II.
During an interview on Fox News, host Kevin Corke praised DOGE’s mission of cutting government spending, prompting Burchett to agree that wasteful spending needed to be trimmed. “There is plenty of fat on that steak that we can trim,” Corke stated.

“Yes, sir,” Burchett replied. “I think you’re going to see this — these so-called accounting errors throughout government because there has been no oversight whatsoever.” Burchett then defended the young staffers working under Musk at DOGE, pushing back against critics who have questioned their experience and qualifications.
“I think DOGE is happening,” he said. “And I always point to these [World War II] guns behind me as they make fun of these 20, 21-year-old kids, so-called kids. My dad was 20 or 21 years old when he took those off of dead Japanese soldiers that he killed in combat to save this world, the Greatest Generation.”
He continued, making a direct comparison between WWII veterans and Musk’s team. “So, and all these so-called kids that we tend to demean are actually heroes.” Corke agreed with Burchett’s sentiment. “No question about that,” the Fox News host insisted.

The comparison sparked immediate debate, with critics arguing that equating young tech employees—tasked with government efficiency measures—to soldiers who fought in one of the most devastating wars in history was inappropriate. Supporters of DOGE, however, have lauded Musk’s initiative as a necessary step toward streamlining government operations, even if the staffers are unconventional hires.
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has drawn both praise and skepticism since its formation. While proponents see it as a bold attempt to cut bureaucracy and modernize government functions, others worry about the inexperience of the young tech workers placed in key roles.

Burchett’s remarks are the latest in a growing partisan divide over Musk’s involvement in federal governance. While many Republicans see him as an innovative force in government, Democrats and some analysts question whether his approach lacks proper oversight.
As Musk continues to shake up Washington with his efficiency-focused agenda, the debate over DOGE and its youthful staff is likely to intensify, with Burchett’s comments adding fuel to the fire.
