Before her rise to international prominence as the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump’s ambitions were focused on Europe, not America. According to Jure Zorc, who dated Melania in the 1990s, her dreams revolved around a career in fashion in Italy or France. Speaking to ABC News, Zorc reflected on her youthful aspirations, stating, “She wanted to live abroad, in Italy, France, a life of fashion.

She was very fashionable.” He added, “I think it was very far from our minds at that time” to consider life in the U.S. Zorc recounted their cinematic first meeting in Slovenia, describing it as something straight out of a movie. “I was on my motorbike, and she was walking down a street.

As I passed by her, I had a moment and thought, ‘Wow, who is this girl? She is so beautiful, I must turn back and follow her,’” he said. His first impressions of Melania were striking: “I was impressed by her beauty from the very first moment. She was very nicely dressed, and her behavior was classy. She was tall, had long hair across her face—I could hardly see her eyes—such style!”

Their relationship, which lasted from 1991 to around 1996, paints a picture of a young woman deeply rooted in her passion for fashion and poised for a future in Europe’s fashion capitals. Donald Trump’s first encounter with Melania, a Slovenian model at the time, occurred in 1998 at a New York nightclub. Trump, then 52 and separated but not yet divorced, was immediately captivated, reports the Irish Star.

Despite being on a date with another woman, he turned his attention to 28-year-old Melania. In a 2005 interview with Larry King, Trump recounted, “I went crazy. I was actually supposed to meet somebody else… I said, ‘Forget about her. Who is the one on the left?’ And it was Melania.”

Melania echoed Trump’s account of their chemistry, saying, “It was a great chemistry and energy. We had a great time. We started to talk. And, you know, something was there right away.” While her journey took her to the United States and into the global spotlight, Zorc’s memories reveal that Melania’s path wasn’t always set for America—it was her connection with Donald Trump that shifted her trajectory.
