Amazon has made headlines this week with its announcement that it will distribute a documentary about Melania Trump—and reports now reveal the online retail giant is paying a staggering $40 million for the deal.

Puck News’ Matthew Belloni reports that Amazon’s investment covers more than just the documentary. Directed by Brett Ratner, a former Hollywood action film director who has faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, the project also includes a “previously undisclosed two-to-three episode follow-up docuseries” on Melania Trump.

According to Belloni’s sources, the former First Lady herself will reportedly be involved in both projects. The hefty price tag highlights Amazon’s confidence in the Melania-centered content as a high-profile draw for its platform. The decision also comes amid reports of significant corporate contributions to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration from major tech firms, including Amazon and Meta.

Trump, known for closely monitoring corporate loyalty, has reportedly been keeping tabs on which companies are contributing to his inauguration. A Rolling Stone report last year revealed that Trump has been inquiring about specific companies’ donations.

“In the past few weeks, Trump has at times asked close allies about how much major corporations have donated to the inaugural committee, and has sometimes inquired about specific companies by name,” the report noted. In one instance, Trump reportedly remarked, “Well, they better do it soon then,” upon learning that a prominent company hadn’t yet donated.

Amazon’s involvement in the Melania documentary comes as the streaming industry increasingly turns to politically charged content to attract viewers. The inclusion of a follow-up docuseries suggests Amazon sees potential in exploring Melania Trump’s life beyond her time as First Lady, likely touching on her personal narrative and public image.

However, the decision to work with Brett Ratner has sparked some controversy, given his history of sexual misconduct allegations. Ratner has largely been absent from Hollywood since the allegations surfaced in 2017, but this high-profile project marks his return to the spotlight.

While Amazon’s sizable investment signals confidence in the documentary and follow-up series, the move has raised questions about corporate motivations, including potential ties between the project and broader political considerations tied to Trump’s presidency and inauguration. Only time will tell if the gamble pays off in audience interest and engagement.
