Texas Governor Greg Abbott found himself in an awkward situation after mistakenly offering condolences to Rosalynn Carter, the late wife of former President Jimmy Carter, following news of his death.

Jimmy Carter passed away on Sunday at the age of 100 in his Plains, Georgia, home, surrounded by family. The former president had battled significant health issues in recent years, including melanoma that metastasized to his liver and brain.

In a statement released shortly after the news broke, Abbott expressed his respect and admiration for Carter’s legacy. “Cecilia and I mourn the loss of former President Jimmy Carter alongside millions of Americans across the country,” the statement read.

“Our nation remains the greatest beacon of freedom and opportunity in the world because of our fearless chief executives who are our guiding force through the best and worst of times. For that, we owe President Carter our enduring gratitude for his service as the 39th President of the United States.”

Abbott also praised Carter’s life of service, highlighting his roles as a husband, father, naval officer, governor, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. “He leaves behind a great legacy… and he will be greatly missed by many,” Abbott said.

However, Abbott’s next remark drew immediate criticism. “Cecilia and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to First Lady Rosalynn Carter and the entire Carter family,” the statement continued.

The error, which overlooked the fact that Rosalynn Carter passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96, led to swift reactions online. The Democratic Party of Collin County, Texas, was quick to call out the mistake.

“Texas Governor Greg Abbott mistakenly offers condolences to the late Rosalyn Carter on the death of her husband, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter,” the group posted on X. “Rosalyn Carter passed away on November 19, 2023. Did anyone in the Governor’s Office proof the condolence note?”

Abbott’s office later updated the statement, removing the reference to Rosalynn Carter. The revised message read, “Cecilia and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to the entire Carter family.”

While the gaffe may have been unintentional, it underscores the importance of careful proofreading, particularly in public statements honoring a former president and his family.
