An 11-year-old girl, Jocelyn Rojo Carranza, tragically took her own life on February 8, just days after being found unresponsive at her Texas home. Her mother, Marbella Carranza, claims her daughter was relentlessly bullied by classmates over her family’s immigration status, leading to the devastating outcome.

In an emotional interview with local news outlet KUVN, Marbella revealed that Jocelynn faced constant taunts at Gainesville Intermediate School. “They were going to call immigration so they could take her parents away, and she would be left alone,” Carranza said. While she did not disclose her family’s immigration status, she emphasized that the school was aware of the bullying but failed to inform her.

Marbella stated that Jocelynn had been attending counseling sessions once or twice a week to report the harassment, but she was only made aware of this after her daughter’s death. “It appears the school was aware of it all, but they never, they never told me what was happening with my daughter,” she said.

“Justice because it’s not fair—the school was negligent for not keeping me informed of what was going on with my daughter.” The Gainesville Independent School District, however, has not confirmed its knowledge of the bullying. In a statement to CNN, the district said, “Whenever we receive a report of bullying, we respond swiftly to ensure all students are safe physically and emotionally.

While we cannot release any information about specific students or incidents, our schools have several policies in place to combat bullying and resolve conflicts.” Jocelynn’s funeral was held at St. Mary Catholic Church, where she was baptized 11 years ago. A mariachi band played solemn music from the church balcony as mourners gathered to pay their respects, according to her online obituary.

Her casket, draped in a white cloth, lay at the center of the service. Gelasio Garcia, a deacon at the church, reflected on Jocelynn’s innocence during the service. “She didn’t know how to understand the things that happen in the world,” he said, according to CNN.
