As Republican lawmakers push efforts to honor former President Donald Trump with national holidays and landmarks in his name, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is calling out their actions as a waste of time and a distraction from real issues facing Americans.
A report from The Wall Street Journal highlights how some GOP members have been prioritizing proposals to boost Trump’s profile—including attempts to make his birthday a federal holiday, rename Dulles Airport after him, or even carve his face into Mount Rushmore.

The report cites Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) as one of the lawmakers leading the charge, proposing to designate Trump’s birthday as a national holiday. According to The Journal, these initiatives reflect a broader Republican effort to showcase loyalty to the 47th president—despite the fact that many of the proposals are unlikely to gain serious traction.
“Congressional Republicans’ message this session is rare for the volume and limited focus of one category of proposals: unabashed adulation for the 47th president and his agenda, even if some of the bills are more performative than realistic,” the report states.
One of the more unusual proposals comes from freshman Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX), who wants to rename Washington Dulles International Airport in Trump’s honor. Gill also suggested that voters nationwide would support renaming their states after Trump, claiming, “Voters across the U.S. would love to rename their state ‘The State of Donald Trump.’”

Despite these proposals, none have gained significant legislative backing, and even with a Republican majority in the House, they remain far from securing the necessary votes.
Meanwhile, Democrats have seized on these GOP loyalty displays as an opportunity to criticize them for neglecting their campaign promises—especially those related to lowering inflation and addressing economic concerns. Leading the charge is Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a rising star in the Democratic Party known for her sharp wit.

“At this point, House Republicans should stop filing these desperate, pointless bills that do nothing to bring down the cost of rent or groceries, and just rent one of Elon’s rockets to write ‘Love me Donny’ in the sky in front of Mar-a-Lago,” Crockett quipped. “It would be faster.”
Crockett’s remarks highlight growing frustration among Democrats, who argue that GOP lawmakers should be focusing on policy solutions rather than symbolic gestures. Whether any of these proposals gain further traction remains to be seen, but for now, they appear more performative than practical.
