Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made headlines Tuesday after dramatically dismissing President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge not to cut Social Security during a confrontation with an advocate. The moment occurred as Greene headed into a meeting with the House DOGE Caucus, which will make recommendations to Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Outside the meeting, Greene was approached by Alex Lawson, the executive director of Social Security Works, a group advocating for the protection of Social Security and Medicare. Lawson attempted to discuss Trump’s promise to preserve these programs, but the interaction quickly turned combative.

“We’re bipartisan,” Lawson began, handing Greene a document detailing Trump’s past pledge not to cut Social Security. “No, you’re not,” Greene shot back. “You’re out here asking bulls— questions.” Lawson persisted, pointing out the significance of the document.

“This is a mailing from — this is Donald Trump,” he explained as Greene abruptly grabbed the paper and threw it into the air. “You know what? We don’t care,” Greene retorted, her frustration clearly on display. Lawson attempted to clarify, emphasizing, “That’s Donald Trump’s mailing.”

Greene, however, dismissed it as a political tactic, saying, “This right here is for Democrat ads to attack Republicans.” Unfazed, Lawson pressed further: “Will you pledge to take Social Security and Medicare cuts off the table?”

Greene refused, launching into a defense of Trump and the Republican agenda. “I don’t need to take a pledge because guess what? The sad story for you is the American people elected Trump, his agenda, and Republicans to lead the country because you guys suck so bad,” Greene said.

Lawson repeated his question, asking once more if Greene would commit to protecting Social Security and Medicare. Greene, however, ignored the inquiry and walked away, ending the exchange.

The heated moment underscored ongoing tensions surrounding Social Security and Medicare, as advocates remain concerned about potential cuts while Republicans emphasize broader economic reforms. Greene’s dismissive reaction to Trump’s documented promise reflects the partisan divide over the issue, particularly as Trump prepares to take office.

The confrontation also highlighted the political sensitivity surrounding Social Security, a program long viewed as a critical safety net for millions of Americans, and a contentious issue likely to remain at the center of debates in Washington.
