A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS highlights a deeply divided America as citizens weigh their feelings about President Donald Trump’s potential second term. The survey exposes a nation split nearly in half, with 52% of adults expressing positive feelings about Trump’s outlook while 48% report negative sentiments.

Among those optimistic, the primary driver remains confidence in Trump’s economic policies. However, for the pessimists, concerns about Trump’s character, rising bigotry, and potential threats to democracy are key reasons for their unease.

Perhaps the most striking finding in this poll is the intensity of emotion on both sides. “Americans are afraid”—29% of respondents didn’t just describe themselves as pessimistic, but outright afraid of what Trump’s leadership could mean for the country. On the other side, 19% of Americans called themselves not just optimistic but enthusiastically so, believing that Trump’s presidency could usher in positive change.

This emotional divide mirrors sentiments seen during previous administrations. For instance, after Barack Obama secured his reelection in 2012, CNN polling at the time revealed a similar breakdown: 15% of Americans were enthusiastic, while 29% reported feeling afraid about the next four years under his leadership.

The Partisan Divide

The poll underscores just how polarized Americans remain along party lines. A staggering 93% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents reported a positive outlook for Trump’s second term, showing overwhelming support from his base. On the flip side, 85% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents expressed negativity, with many voicing significant concerns about the administration’s direction.

Demographic Trends

Beyond partisan divides, opinions about Trump’s potential second term also differ significantly across demographic lines.

  • Among Americans without college degrees, 58% expressed positive feelings.
  • Among white Americans, support stood at 57%, compared to 53% among Hispanic Americans.
  • Meanwhile, the outlook was far less positive among college graduates (40%) and Black Americans, where support plunged to just 25%.

Methodology

The poll, conducted from December 5th to 8th, surveyed a random national sample of 1,011 adults using both telephone interviews with live interviewers and online surveys. The sample was drawn from a probability-based panel to ensure a representative cross-section of the American public.

What It Means for Trump’s Presidency

With less than 20% of Americans feeling genuinely enthusiastic, Trump’s second-term outlook reflects a fractured nation, with emotions running high on both sides. While economic optimism continues to fuel hope among his supporters, Trump’s detractors remain deeply wary of his impact on American democracy and society.

The stark contrast in these views paints a clear picture: whether optimistic or afraid, Americans are bracing for a second term they know will be anything but calm.
